What are Yema Balls?
Yema balls are a type of Filipino candy or dessert made of egg yolk, butter, condensed milk, and crushed peanuts. It is believed that they originated from Bulacan, a province in the Philippines. The word "yema" is actually a Spanish word that translates to "egg yolk." There are theories that this type of Filipino sweet started during the Spanish colonization when egg whites were used in building constructions, and the leftover egg yolks were used to make dishes.
The original ingredients of yema balls were just egg yolks and sugar, which were heated and stirred until the consistency thickened. They were then formed into balls or pyramids and covered with white sugar or simply wrapped in small plastic cellophane and shaped into pyramids. Over time, the recipe evolved to include peanuts and condensed milk, giving it a more flavorful and yummier taste.
When are Yema Balls Typically Served?
Typically, yema balls are served as a dessert or a standalone snack. They are often a favorite among kids because of their sweet taste. They are served during birthday parties or made on an ordinary day to give kids a sweet treat. In the Philippines, most school canteens sell yema balls because they are one of the kids' favorite treats due to their sweet and delicious taste!
