Origin of the Lettuce Wrap
Asian lettuce wrap is a delicious and famous dish that originated in China. It then migrated throughout Southeast Asia and eventually became popular in Laos and Thailand. However, this dish has also been common in the United Kingdom and the United States since the early mid-20th century. It is believed that P.F. Chang (a restaurant serving Asian-American cuisine, founded by Cecilia Chang) is the first-ever credited restaurant to put the lettuce wraps on the food map.
When is a Lettuce Wrap Typically Served?
Asian lettuce wraps are commonly served at special events like cocktail parties. They are served separately, and all you need to do is scoop a tablespoon of the ground pork into the lettuce sheet, wrap it up, and enjoy. It is an entertaining style of meal.

Asian Lettuce Wrap’s Primary Ingredients – Ground Pork and Lettuce
To make a delicious and savory lettuce wrap, you need to choose good quality meat to grind. Pork is very common in malls and supermarkets since it is a basic ingredient in most dishes. Be meticulous when choosing the quality of the meat. A few factors of good quality meat are a desirable color, like bright red. You can also try to press the meat with your finger; if it bounces back, then it is fresh. Another factor is the smell.
Another important ingredient for this dish is, of course, the lettuce, which is used as the wrap for the ground pork. Often used in salads, lettuce is a common ingredient in dishes like soups, sandwiches, and wraps. It can also be grilled.
Note that there are different kinds of lettuce, and the one that you need in an Asian lettuce wrap recipe is butter lettuce. It is loose and round in shape with sweet leaves and a mild flavor, which is perfect for wraps.

Tips and Tricks When Making Ground Pork Lettuce Wraps
- To keep lettuce crisp, you can add a few paper towels to the leaves to absorb excess moisture and replace them every other day.
- To maintain the crispiness of the lettuce, it should have a good amount of airflow to stay crisp.
- Use aluminum foil to wrap veggies like lettuce to keep them crisp for up to four weeks. Wrap it in foil and keep it in the fridge’s crisper drawer.
- Marinate the ground pork: For extra flavor, marinate the ground pork with soy sauce, garlic, and ginger for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
- Use a hot pan: When cooking the ground pork, make sure the pan is hot to achieve a nice sear and enhance the flavor.
- Add vegetables: Enhance the nutritional value by adding finely chopped vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms to the ground pork mixture.
- Serve with dipping sauce: Offer a variety of dipping sauces like hoisin sauce, soy sauce, or a spicy chili sauce to complement the flavors of the lettuce wraps.
- Prepare in advance: You can prepare the ground pork mixture in advance and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, simply reheat and assemble the wraps.
- Use iceberg lettuce: If butter lettuce is not available, iceberg lettuce can be a good alternative due to its crisp texture and sturdy leaves.
- Garnish with herbs: Add a fresh touch by garnishing the wraps with chopped cilantro, mint, or green onions.
