Origin of the dish

Yema balls is a type of Filipino candy or dessert made of egg yolk, butter, condensed milk and crashed peanuts. It is believed that it was originated from Bulacan, province of Philippines. The word Yema is actually a Spanish word which translates to “egg yolk”. There are theories that this type of Filipino sweets started from the Spanish colonization, when the egg whites are used in building constructions, and they used the egg yolk leftovers to make dishes.

The original ingredients of yema balls are just egg yolks and sugar, which are heated and stirred until its consistency thickens. It is then formed into balls or pyramid and covered with white sugar or not, just put in a small plastic cellophane and shaped into pyramid. The sweets evolved over time and was added with peanuts and condensed milk to give it a flavorful and yummier taste.

Typically, yema balls are served as dessert or just a snack alone, it is often a favorite by many kids because of its sweet taste. It is served during birthday parties, or just made on an ordinary day to give the kids a sweet treat. In the Philippines, most school canteens sell yema balls because it's one of the kid's favorite treats due to its sweet and delicious taste!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1 cup crushed peanuts
  • 1 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. Heat a deep skillet. In this recipe, I used a wok. Melt butter until brown.

  2. Pour the condensed milk and mix thoroughly.

  3. Stir in the eggs yolks and next will be the peanuts.

  4. Continuously stir until the consistency becomes thick. Note! Careful not to overcook to prevent a burnt taste.

  5. Grease a large bowl with oil or margarine and pour in the mixture. Let it cool.

  6. Then scoop about half tbsp of the mixture and form a small ball. Roll over the white sugar until fully coated.
