This is just a mixture of all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, sugar, vanilla extract and vegetable oil. Chilled covered in the fridge for at least 2 hours or in the freezer for just 45 minutes. Rolled into a ball and coated with powdered sugar and ready to bake. By its ingredients and taste you can compare this to a brownie, it’s just that crinkle is in a form of cookies.

Chocolate Crinkles Cookies were first baked by Helen Fredell in St. Paul Minnesota in the early 20th century. And the first cookbook ever published this recipe was Crocker’s Book names “Cooky Carnival”. Crocker shared abut being served with Chocolate Crinkles Cookies at Mrs. Fredells’s home and she shared that she begged Mrs. Fredell for the recipe. Thankfully she did, and now we are enjoying every bite of this recipe.

  • Bake one sheet at a time. Since the hottest part of the oven is at the top. If you bake two sheets at the same time the upper sheet blocks the heat which does not help the cookies in the lower part to crinkle or spread more.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, mix together the eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract and sugar. Mix well.

  2. Then sift in the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder. Give a good sift and mix together until well combined. Cover and keep in a freezer for 1 hour.

  3. Using a spoon with plastic, scoop a spoonful of the mixture and coat in powdered sugar. Roll to form a ball. Repeat process for the remaining mixture.

  4. Put in a baking pan with parchment paper. Bake for 170 degree C for 15 minutes.
